Yeah me too...
I guess zoos are fun for kids, but they usually leave a sour taste in my mouth..
We had an incident at the San Francisco zoo where a big cat got out and attacked the kid who was taunting it... Sad outcome...
We had our own tragedy with the bears the summer before last, where a young man fell from above into the bear enclosure:

When I visited a few days ago that enclosure was empty.
I have misgivings too but fond childhood memories and I guess the best are educational.
I have the same feelings here too. I do like the chance to see the animals closer than I would ever get a chance to otherwise.
Amazing stretch the Pachyderm has.
I love the zoo on one hand but hate to see the animals caged up on the other. They are such amazing creatures!

Feel bad for the animals, too, though sometimes I think they might be safer than in the wild.
This one certainly looks sad.
I agree - elephants are creatures of wide open spaces and deserve better. They must get bored out of their skulls. Still lovely to see them, but I wish they had more space and more to do.

Nothing worse than seeing stupid patrons pelting lions with peanuts through the fence. i hate to see them penned up too - but I love your photo of this elephant.
