St. Peter's Church

I took this picture on Sunday. This church is on the outskirts of the town of Novi Pazar and was originally built in the 9th or 10 century.
The Serbian Orthodox cemetary that surrounds it is from the 18th and 19th centuries. I've got one word for this place: STUNNING.
I could keep adding words but you probably get the picture.

Golija Mountain

This weekend I went to the beautiful Golija Mountain in southwestern Serbia. Unfortunately I didn't have my usual camera with me, for reasons I won't admit bore you with, just a small point-and-shoot. :(
In this top picture you can see a GIANT ANTHILL which is built entirely from pine needles. These ants secrete a kind of acidic substance which is said to have healing properties especially when inhaled (for the treatment of asthma, etc). I was encouraged to press both of my hands onto a swarm of ants (seriously!) and can I just say, those suckers sting! But they say they don't bite, it's merely that healing acid I felt. Hm...

An un-cat picture

When I was first inspired to take this picture there was a real cat on that ledge on the left, but it leaped off right before I took this pic. Refusing to admit defeat, I've created an accurate rendering of the pic as it could have appeared if the cat had stayed put.
I've got a case of photographer's block, if such a thing exists. But I'll keep going...

Maca

You can see some light specks in this picture...that's backlit maca which literally means kitten. That's what we call the fluff from the poplar trees. Sounds like they might have it a little bit worse in Moscow. Maybe?

World of Wine

I went to a wine fair Saturday at Sava Center. These girls were kind enough to let me take their picture. They were beautifully representing red and white wine!

It was a beautiful Easter Sunday today. I spent it across the river in New Belgrade (but that's not me on the bike). :-)

In the news today was this (picture from b92.net):
I was on Slavija today and wondering where the globe was...last I saw it, it was looking a little deflated so I just assumed that it was taken down because it ran out of air (helium, obviously!) Nope, turns out our gusty weather broke the globe free. Reportedly it was followed by car by some authorities or other to make sure it didn't disturb air traffic...Yankee in Belgrade posted a pic of this globe when it was still in place. Actually she posted it on the very same day I had my own picture of the globe ready for upload, but she beat me to it.

A little pick me up

This little girl was freshening up her wreath.
For Lazarus Saturday (Vrbica in Serbian) children wear wreaths made from willow branches (and bells on ribbons, too-- if you look closely you can see she has one around her neck). It's part of the Orthodox Easter celebration.
A Yankee in Belgrade blogged about this holiday yesterday, with help from her dog Bibi, I'm sure. :)

Not so little anymore

I posted a picture of this cat way back on January 22nd, with the comment "This is my new little friend who hangs out behind my building."
Well, she's not so little anymore, at least not around the middle! The poor thing is heavily 'with kitten.' Residents of the building provide food for her but it remains to be seen what will become of the little ones. :-/

Monthly Theme Day - Water

Running for the bus in a summer downpour

March wasn't a great month for my little photo blog, and April isn't starting off much better. Not only did I forget to sign up for this month's theme, but I'm posting a picture from last summer (so much for "taken today or yesterday"), that wasn't taken by me, and wasn't taken in Belgrade, either! It's in the relatively nearby town of Novi Sad ( by occasional guest contributor Mr. B). :-)
